Chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women
Khawar Mumtaz is currently the Chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women. An active member of the women’s rights movement she worked with the leading women’s rights organization Shirkat Gah where she also became its CEO. Her experience includes university teaching and journalism. Mumtaz has a Master of Arts in International Relations and a diploma in French. Mumtaz’ expertise is in the fields of women and development, political participation, economic empowerment, environment and reproductive health and rights. She is the author of research reports and books and in1989 received the Prime Minister’s award for Women of Pakistan; Two Steps Forward One Step Back? A book she co-authored with Farida Shaheed. She is also the recipient of the civil award Sitra-e- Imtiaz for promoting women’s rights.
